5 important publications with citations:

1. Brusselle GG, Joos GF, Bracke KR.
New insights into the immunology of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Lancet 2011;378:1015-26. IF: 38.278; citations: 308; ranking Medicine, General & Internal: 2/155.
State of the art review on the immunologic mechanisms of chronic obstructive pumonary disease (COPD), integrating innate and adaptive immune responses, autoimmunity, oxidative stress, respiratory infections and remodeling into a common pathogenetic network.

2. Demoor T, Bracke KR, Dupont L, Plantinga M, Bondue B, Roy M, Lannoy V, Lambrecht B, Brusselle GG, Joos GF. The role of chemR23 in the induction and resolution of cigarette smoke-induced inflammation. J Immunol 2011;186: 5457-67. IF: SCI 5.788; citations: 36; ranking Immunology: 20/139.
In a murine cigarette smoke (CS) model of COPD, we studied the importance of chemokine-like ChemR23 for the induction and resolution of inflammation in CS-exposed lungs. Our data support a role for ChemR23 in directing innate and adaptive immune cells in CS-exposed lungs.

3. Brusselle GG, VanderStichele C, Jordens P, Deman R, Slabbynck H, Ringoet V, Verleden G, Demedts IK, Verhamme K, Delporte A, Demeyere B, Claeys G, Boelens J, Padalko E, Verschakelen, J, Van Maele G, Deschepper E, Joos GF. Azithromycin for prevention of exacerbations in severe asthma (AZISAST): a multicentre randomised double-blind placebo-controlled trial.
Thorax. 2013;68(4):322-29. IF: 8.562; citations: 193; ranking Respiratory system: 2/54
Investigator-nitiated multicentre trial, sponsored by the Flemisch Government, where we demonstrated for the first time, in a randomized clinical trial of 6 months duration, effects of a macrolide in patients with severe non-eosinophilic asthma

4. Moerloose KB, Pauwels RA, Joos GF. Short-term cigarette smoke exposure enhances allergic airway inflammation in mice.
Am J Respir Crit Care Med 2005;172:168-172. IF: 8.689; citations: 71; ranking Respiratory System: 1/18
This is one of the first descriptions of a mouse model where allergen and cigarette smoke were shown to interact at the level of inflammation. It demonstrates that by combining smoke and allergen, the inflammation in the airways changes in a qualitative and quantitative way. It helps in understanding the effect of cigarette smoking in patients with asthma.

Indirect airway challenges. Eur Respir J 2003;21:1050-68. IF: 2.999; citations: 245; ranking Respiratory System: 9/31

This European task force summarizes the state of the art of bronchoprovocation by indirect bronchoconstrictor (such as exercise, cold air, tachykinins, adenosine). It is the end result of clinical and experimental work starting in the eighties. The description of the concept of indirect bronchial responsiveness originated from our work in rats on tachykinin- and adenosine-induced bronchoconstriction and from provocation studies performed in patients with asthma.
