Zoltan Daniel Kadar - Biography#

Daniel Z. Kadar holds the higher doctorate of Doctor of Letters (D.Litt, 2015), along with his PhD degree (2006, Chinese linguistics). He is also Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, UK. He is currently Research Professor and Chair of Hungarian Academy of Sciences Momentum Research Group at the Research Centre for Linguistics, Hungary. Along with his European position, Daniel Kadar is also Chair Professor and Director of the Centre of Pragmatics Research at Dalian University of Foreign Languages, China. He is also Vising Professor at Hellenic American University, USA/Greece.

He is author/editor of 25 books, published with leading academic publishers such as Cambridge University Press. He has also published a large number of research papers in high-impact academic journals. Along with his native Hungarian, he is a fluent speaker of Chinese, Japanese and English. He has research interest in East Asian languages and related research, cross-cultural and intercultural pragmatics, historical pragmatics, linguistic politeness, interactional rituals and other areas. His most recent books include Politeness, Impoliteness and Ritual (2017, Cambridge University Press), Intercultural Politeness (with Helen Spencer-Oatey, Cambridge University Press, 2020) and Cross-Cultural Pragmatics (with Juliane House, Cambridge University Press, 2021). He is Co-Editor in Chief of Contrastive Pragmatics – A Cross-Disciplinary Journal (Brill Publishers) and founding editor of East Asian Pragmatics (Equinox).
