Nanyan Guo is an expert of Japanese Studies, and cultural exchange between East and West since the 16th century.

She taught at the University of Otago (New Zealand) for fifteen years, and conducted research at the International Research Center for Japanese Studies (Kyoto, Japan) for nine years, leading research projects with scholars from China, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Serbia, South Korea, Spain, the UK, and the United States. She has published four monographs and co-authored a dozen of books. Currently she is a professor of the Global Leadership Program at the University of Tokyo, Japan.

Her recent publications include four monographs, Refining Nature in Modern Japanese Literature: The Life and Art of Shiga Naoya, (Lexington Books, 2014), Interpreting “World Literature” through Shiga Naoya (Sakuhinsha, 2016, in Japanese), Following Xavier’s Dreams: Modern Missionary Writings in Japanese (Heibonsha, 2018, in Japanese), Making Xavier's Dream Real: Vernacular Writings of Catholic Missionaries in Modern Japan (Japan Publishing Industry Foundation for Culture, 2020), and four edited volumes, Japan’s Wartime Medical Atrocities: Comparative Inquiries in Science, History and Ethics (Routledge, 2010), Bilingual Japanese Literature (Sangensha, 2013, in Japanese), Japanese Literature by Missionaries: the Origin of Multi-Lingual, Multi-Cultural Communication (Akashi shoten, 2017, in Japanese), and The Journey of the Woodblock Prints of Father Marc de Rotz: from Konstanz to Shanghai and Nagasaki (c. 1875) (Sojusha bijutsu shuppan, 2019, in Japanese)
