Luiz Oosterbeek - Biography#


Graduated in History (1982) and PhD in Archaeology (1994), Luiz Oosterbeek is Professor of the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar, member of the Portuguese Academy of History and the President of the International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences, being chairholder of UNESCO-IPT Chair in Humanities and Cultural Integrated Landscape Management. He coordinates the Quaternary branch of the Geosciences Centre of Coimbra University and conducted research in the fields of archaeology, heritage and landscape management in Portugal, Africa and Southern America.

Author of over 300 papers and 70 books, Luiz received prizes and awards from the European Commission, the Portuguese Ministry of Culture, Gulbenkian Foundation, Foundation for Science and Technology, the Brazilian Order of Advocates and private sponsors.

He is member of the Scientific Council of the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris and of the European University Centre for Cultural Heritage in Ravello and visiting Professor in several Universities in Europe and Brazil. President of Instituto Terra e Memória (Portugal), he is Director of the Museum of Prehistoric Art in Mação (PT) and Vice-President of HERITY International (IT). Former Secretary-General of the International Union of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Sciences, Luiz is a FCT designated board member of Humanities in the European Research Area network (HERA).
