This paper developed concept and properties the vector median filter which is a robust filter for vector valued signals. It analyzed its theoretical properties, for instance the root signals (or invariant signals) of the filter. It also showed the usefulness of this filter type for color image filtering especially for applications where it is important to maintain the set of color values in the image. It has inspired much subsequent work on color filtering.

This is a widely used textbook, one of the first on nonlinear filters. A unique feature of the book is that it compares over fifty different types of filters using both theoretical analysis and performance analysis on a fixed set of natural and artificial images. This helps the student to get a good understanding of the properties of different filters.

In this paper the properties of weighted median filters are analyzed using the recently developed concept of stack filters. A method for finding the weighted order statistic filter equivalent to a stack filter is presented. The paper also shows how to develop a non-recursive expansion of a recursive weighted median filter. By developing many toos and results for weighed median and weighted order statistics filters the paper has inspired further work on nonlinear filtering.
