Establishment of the Independent Institute of Philosophy (Institute de Philosophie Indépendent)#

Academia Europaea draws attention to the establishment of the international association Independent Institute of Philosophy. The institute was founded by Russian philosophers who left their country in dissent from the politics of the authorities that has led to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The international association Independent Institute of Philosophy was registered in Paris in May 2023. It was founded by Russian philosophers who left their country in dissent from the politics of the authorities that has led to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The co-founders of the IPHI are Yulia Sineokaya, former deputy director of the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IPhRAS), and Alexey Zhavoronkov, former senior researcher at the IPhRAS. In addition to philosophers, the association comprises anthropologists, philologists, sociologists, historians, psychologists, uniting Russian, Belarussian, Ukrainian, European, and American scholars from different generations.

The Independent Institute of Philosophy pursues three main tasks: It conducts critical studies in philosophy, humanities and social sciences, supports scholars who have been forced to leave Russia, and develops joint research projects with colleagues from all over the world. The association conducts its activities in various languages, mainly French, Russian, English and German.

IPHI’s research projects focus primarily on topics related to current events in the social and political sphere, calling for cooperation between scholars from the fields of historical studies, political philosophy, epistemology, sociology, bioethics and medical humanities, philosophy of science, and many others. Among such projects are Observatory for Comparative Bioethics and Dictionary of Political Language of Putin’s Russia. Starting in September 2023, the association will host a monthly seminar at Sorbonne-Pantheon University. The association is open to all forms of international collaboration in social sciences and humanities.
