No. 1/2018, March 2018#

Letter from the Barcelona Hub Academic Director#

Dear colleagues,

We are initiating an exciting year for the activities of the Barcelona Hub. As in former years, we are starting with a programme of different activities related to the International Women’s Day, commemorated on March 8 around the world. Our programme is called AE-BKH Women’s Week 2018, to be developed on March 6, 7 and 8, with three different activities in three different significant locations of Barcelona, i.e., the Institute for Catalan Studies, the Natural Science Museum of Barcelona and the Athenaeum of Barcelona. This year’s theme is “Woman, science and culture: A symbiotic connection”. The programme has already been circulated to members.

On March 6 we will have a concert by Lídia Pujol and her accompanying musicians at the Institute for Catalan Studies, where our hub is located. Lídia Pujol is a renowned singer and songwriter who sings and composes in different languages. The concert has the title “Polorum Regina [Queen of the Universe]. Women as a referent of freedom”, with songs in Catalan, Spanish, Judeo-Spanish, English and Latin.

On March 7 we will have a Premiere screening of the documentary film for TV “Symbiotic Earth: How Lynn Margulis rocked the boat and started a scientific revolution”, directed by John Feldman and produced by Susan Davies, both from Hummingbird Films, NY. The screening will take place in the Natural Science Museum of Barcelona, located in an outstanding building by Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron at the Forum of Barcelona.

Finally, on March 8 we will have a session on “Symbiotic science: The legacy of Lynn Margulis” at the Athenaeum of Barcelona. The Athenaeum of Barcelona is a civil association that is over a hundred and fifty years old, and it is a centre for intellectual debate with the main objective of promoting dialogue and intellectual activity.

On May 16 and the following days, we will commemorate the first UNESCO International Day of Light. The IDL is a global initiative that will promote an annual celebration for the diffusion in society of the crucial role that the sciences and technologies of light represent in fields so diverse as medicine, biology, communications, production of energy, agriculture, astronomy, etc.

To close the Hub’s activities during the year, the Barcelona Hub will host the 30th AE Annual Member’s Conference between 28-30 November. In the general newsletter of the AE sent by our Executive Secretary, Dr. David Coates, on February 22, there is an advanced notice and outline of the meeting, which will include our already traditional celebration of the Disputatio of Barcelona, this year devoted to the science and application of Economy, and related to the “Cooperation vs. Competition dilemma”. The general theme of the Annual Conference will be “Building Bridges 2018”.

We are preparing the scientific programme of the Conference together with our president, Prof. Sierd Cloetingh, and other members of the AE Board of Trustees. In May, we will send all of you a detailed schedule of the event and information on how to register. The Conference will be held in the IEC building (November 28) and in the CosmoCaixa Science Museum (November 29). On November 30 we will have an optional geological excursion (another tradition in the AE Annual Conferences) visiting the karstic area of Banyoles Lake and the volcanic region of Olot. The excursion will be limited to a maximum of 50 people. Please save those dates in your busy agenda.

Besides the above-mentioned activities, we will have others, both in Barcelona and in Madrid, in collaboration with different academic institutions, which will be announced in future “BarceloNEWS” (this digital bulletin) and on our website, http://barcelona.acadeuro.org. I hope all the attendants to the different events and the Academia Europaea as a whole will enjoy the activities of the Barcelona Hub during the year of 2018.

Cordially yours,

Ricard Guerrero Academic Director
