Professor Svante Pääbo

The Swede Svante Pääbo is Director of the Department of Evolutionary Genetics at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. His seminal contributions to paleogenetics have enabled reconstruction of the recent evolutionary history of the human species and allowed identification of genetic traits that make us uniquely human.

In his education – his first undergraduate degree was in the humanities (history, archaeology and Russian) followed by medicine – he reflects a research-orientation that transcends traditional boundaries between the cultural, the human and the natural sciences and so does the research profile of his home institution, the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, where i.a. geneticists and linguist have been working together. Svante Pääbo is a central scholar in European interdisplinary research on hominin origins and evolution, and is twice ERC grantee.
