Luc Montagnier (1932 - 2022)#

Professor Luc Montagnier, since 1988 member of the Cell and Development Biology section of the Academy and the 2008 Nobel Prize Laureate for Physiology and Medicine, passed away on 8th February 2022.

Professor Crisanto Gutiérrez, the Chair of the Cell and Developmental Biology section writes:

"We have received the sad news that Prof. Luc Montaigner passed away on February 8, 2022. His pioneering discoveries in the field of virology are intimately linked to AIDS research. The discovery of the human immunodeficiency virus was key to facilitate future studies of the virus and AIDS and also to be awarded with the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 2008. He also received numerous prestigious awards and recognitions throughout his scientific career. He was a prominent Member of Academia Europaea since its inception (1988), in the Section of Cell and Developmental Biology. The scientific community and in particular the Academia Europaea will miss him and will be in debt with Prof. Montaigner for his contributions. "
