Harald zur Hausen (1936 - 2023)#
Academia Europaea is saddened to announce the death of Professor Harald zur Hausen, Professor Emeritus from the University of Freiburg and recipient of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (shared with Luc Montagnier and Françoise Barré-Sinoussi). Prof. zur Hausen, member of the Cell and Developmental Biology section of Academia Europaea since 1990, passed away on 28th May, 2023, 87 years old.

We have received the sad news that Prof. Harald zur Hausen passed away on May 28, 2023. His pioneering discoveries in the field of virology, in particular on papiloma virus, are only part of many other key achievements during his highly productive scientific life. His name has been intimately linked to human papiloma virus as a causative agent on cervix cancer, that was the basis for being awarded the Nobel Prize (50%) in Physiology or Medicine in 2008. The other half of the Prize was shared with Luc Montaigner, also deceased last year, and Fraçoise Barré-Sinoussi. Prof. zur Hausen received other prestigious awards and recognitions including the Robert Koch Prize (1975), the Charles S. Mott Prize (1986), and the Gairdner Foundation International Award (2008), to cite only some. He has been a prominent member of Academia Europaea since 1990 in the Cell and Developmentl Biology Section. The scientific community and in particular the Academia Europaea will miss him and will be in debt with Prof. zur Hausen for his very relevant and long-lived contributions.
