In accordance with AE Regulation, section 13: The Trustees hereby announce a call for nominations for eligible members, as candidates for election as Vice President of the Academia Europaea.

Under our statutes, an elected Vice President is an officer of the Academia and as such must be willing to be appointed as a Trustee and to assume all legal obligations required of Trustees under UK Charity law.

The Vice President shall serve for a period of three years, with the option of a re-election for a second and final term of three years.

The closing date for receipt of nominations will be 31 August 2022.#

Nominations procedure#

Nominations are open to all Ordinary Members of the Academia Europaea who have a record of regular financial contributions to the Academy. New members elected in 2021 are eligible. Life members are eligible and members granted a formal subscription exemption are also eligible. Foreign members are not eligible to stand as candidates, nor are honorary members.

There are no age limits. Note that an elected Vice President cannot concurrently hold a position as a Class chair, or as a Section chair, but may serve as a Section committee member.

Self-nomination is acceptable, but each candidate must have a statement of support of two members, to be submitted along with the nomination.

The nomination form must be competed fully and returned as an attachment by email to the Executive Secretary, by the closing date:

The Vice President(s) will be required to adopt a portfolio of responsibilities, as agreed with the President and will have an external representational role on behalf of the Academy.

A search group will be established to scrutinise all candidates and the Board reserves the right to approach potential candidates directly, in advance of any recommendations to, and subsequent election by the membership. If the Board judges that no candidates are suitable, a further call will be published. The Board reserves the right to propose to the membership a shortlist of candidates according to the needs of the Board [in terms of balance and expertise] and may appoint up to three Vice Presidents.

It is hoped to hold an electronic ballot in late September, or failing that, an election as described in the regulations, at the AGM of 2022. In any event, the Vice president(s) will assume office at the close of the AGM of 2022.
