The 2022 Fields medal awarded to Hugo Duminil-Copin, James Maynard and Maryna Viazovska#

Academia Europaea congratulates Hugo Duminil-Copin, Professor at Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques (France) and Université de Genève (Switzerland), James Maynard, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford (UK) and Maryna Viazovska, Professeure Ordinaire at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland) to their award of the Fields medal; the fourth recipient is June Huh, Professor at Princeton University (USA).

Hugo Duminil-Copin, James Maynard and Maryna Viazovska are all three members of the Mathematics section of the Academia Europaea.

They have been awarded the Fields medal, respectively

« For solving longstanding problems in the probabilistic theory of phase transitions in statistical physics, especially in dimensions three and four. » (Hugo Duminil-Copin)

« For contributions to analytic number theory, which have led to major advances in the understanding of the structure of prime numbers and in Diophantine approximation » (James Maynard)

« For the proof that the E8 lattice provides the densest packing of identical spheres in 8 dimensions, and further contributions to related extremal problems and interpolation problems in Fourier analysis. » (Maryna Viazovska)

Maryna Viazovska is after Maryam Mirzakhani, the second woman to win the prize.

The Fields medal is arguably the most prestigious prize in mathematics considered by many at the equivalent of the Nobel Prize; it is awarded every four years by the International Mathematical Union, at the beginning of each International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) to mathematicians of no more than 40 years of age.

This year, the ICM was supposed to take place in Saint-Petersburg but the venue was cancelled after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Instead the 2022 ICM is taking place in virtual format (https://www.mathunion.org/icm/virtual-icm-20229).
