Members of Academia Europaea elected to the National Academy of Sciences#


Eight members of Academia Europaea, among them the President of Academia Europaea, Professor Donald Dingwell MAE, have been elected as international members of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS).

About the National Academy of Sciences#

The National Academy of Sciences is a private, nonprofit institution that was established under a congressional charter signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. It recognizes achievement in science by election to membership, and - with the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine - provides science, engineering, and health policy advice to the federal government and other organizations.

The National Academy of Sciences' mission is:

  • Recognizing and elevating outstanding science
  • Fostering a broad understanding of science
  • Overseeing the National Research Council in producing and promoting the adoption of independent, authoritative, trusted scientific advice to the government for the benefit of society

The current president of the NAS is the geophysicist Professor Marcia McNutt MAE, member of the Earth and Cosmic Sciences Section of Academia Europaea since 2016.

The elected AE members are:
  • Christer Betsholtz MAE; professor, Department of Immunology, Genetics, and Pathology, Uppsala University; and professor, Vascular Biology, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, member of the Cell and Developmental Biology Section of Academia Europaea since 2003.
  • Donald Dingwell MAE; professor, director, and chair of mineralogy and petrology, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany, Academia Europaea President and member of the Earth and Cosmic Sciences Section of Academia Europaea since 2007.
  • Ernst Fehr MAE; professor of economics and director of the UBS Center for Economics in Society, Department of Economics, University of Zürich, Switzerland, member of the The Human Mind and its Complexity Section of Academia Europaea since 2009.
  • Albert Fert MAE; professor emeritus, Department of Physics, University of Paris-Saclay, and scientific director, Laboratoire Albert Fert, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, France, member of the Physics Section of Academia Europaea since 2009.
  • Angela Friederici MAE; professor, director, and scientific member, Department of Neuropsychology, Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences, Germany, member of the The Human Mind and its Complexity Section of Academia Europaea since 2007.
  • Ferenc Krausz MAE; director, Attosecond Physics Division, Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics; professor of physics and chair of experimental physics and laser physics, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany; and professor and chair, Department of Physics, The University of Hong Kong, member of the Physics Section of Academia Europaea since 2012.
  • Joachim Sauer MAE; professor and senior researcher, Institute of Chemistry, Humboldt Universität, Germany, member of the Chemical Sciences Section of Academia Europaea since 2009.
  • Eörs Szathmáry MAE; professor, Department of Plant Systematics, Ecology, and Theoretical Biology, Eötvös Loránd University, Hungary; and director, Parmenides Center for the Conceptional Foundations of Science, Germany, member of the Ecology and Evolution Section of Academia Europaea since 2001.
