To mark its centenary, the International Committee of Historical Sciences – Comité International des Sciences Historiques CISH/ICHS proclaims 2026 the Year of History, and holds a major conference at the University of Leipzig: CISH 2026: The Past, the Present, and the Future of History. The CISH comprises 54 national committees, and 27 international organizations.

The CISH centennial conference celebrates 100 years of international cooperation in the historical sciences since the foundation of the CISH in Geneva on May 14, 1926. More than 700 speakers, 60 panels, and 10 special events, in the organizers’ own words, “explore the developments, dynamics, and diversification the historical sciences have undergone over the past decades while also fostering inspiration for future research and innovation”.

Many participants in the CISH Centennial Conference are members of Academia Europaea, starting with the local organizer, Professor Matthias Middell MAE. Prof. Middell is also a member of the CISH Board, alongside Professor Fernando Tortarolo MAE, the General Secretary of CISH.

The Plenary Session on the Topic of the Conference (28 August 2026, 16:30 - 18:00, House 1 HS015, Campus Jahnallee, Leibzig), is moderated by Matthias Middell and features four historians: Ruth Mostern (Pittsburgh), Steffi Marung (Leipzig), Jie-Hyun Lim (Sogang), Sorin Antohi MAE, former member of the CISH Board.

Members of Academia Europaea, Antoon De Baets MAE (University of Groningen), Ewa Domańska MAE (Polish Academy of Sciences / Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań), Pauli Kettunen MAE (University of Helsinki), Jürgen Kocka MAE (Freie Universität Berlin), Christina Koulouri MAE (Panteion University of Political and Social Sciences, Athens), Bogdan Murgescu MAE (Bucharest University), Ioan-Aurel Pop MAE (Babeș-Bolyai University Cluj-Napoca / Romanian Academy Bucharest), Marek Tamm MAE (Tallinn University) and Stefan Troebst MAE (University of Leipzig) are among the many distinguished panelists.

The congress takes place at the Educational Science Center, Campus Jahnallee, Leipzig University, organized in partnership with the Leipzig Research Centre Global Dynamics (ReCentGlobe).
