Aldo Zollo - Biography#

Aldo Zollo is full Professor of Seismology and Digital Signals Analysis and Processing at the University "Federico II" of Naples where he graduated in Physics in 1983. He received the PhD in Geophysics of the Solid Earth (Seismology) at the University of Paris VII in 1990.

All along his career, Aldo has been working at the theoretical and experimental developments in seismology with a special focus on the imaging of complex geological structures as well as on earthquake source investigation. Another research field, which he has been involved in, is the experimental study of the earthquake source from the micro-to-macro earthquake size with developments of methods to analyze the earthquake initiation, propagation and arrest processes by the simulation and inversion of near-source strong motion records. This led him to approach the problem of earthquake early warning, with its applications to real-time seismology and seismic engineering.

He is responsible for many research projects funded by national and international bodies in the areas of seismic exploration of volcanoes, modeling of source processes and development of early warning systems for seismic prevention.

He was member of the National Group of Experts for the Research Evaluation for the area "Earth Sciences" (GEV04) in Italy (2011-2012), Member of the National Commission for the Forecasting and Prevention of Major Risks appointed by the President of the Council of Ministers (2012-2015), Member of the Scientific Councils of INGV (Italy) (2001-2010) and ISTerre (France) (2012-2014), Editor of Geophysical Research Letters (Solid Earth) (2001-2007), Member of the MISE Commission (2014-2019) on the drafting of guidelines for the monitoring of induced seismicity in areas of extraction and cultivation of hydrocarbons.

In 2007, the President of the Republic awarded him the honor of "Commendatore della Repubblica Italiana" for scientific merits.
