Tong Yang - Biography#

Tong Yang received his Bachelor and Master degrees from Zhongshan University in 1987 and 1990 in China, and his PhD degree in 1993 from the University of California, Davis in USA. After one year post-doctor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, he joined City University of Hong Kong in 1994 as Lecturer, as Professor in 2002 and Chair Professor in 2007. He has been elected as a Member of the European Academy of Sciences in 2018, as a Member of The World Academy of Sciences in 2021, and as an American Mathematical Society Fellow in 2021.

Tong Yang works in the fields of nonlinear partial differential equations and kinetic theory. He has made fundamental contributions to several research areas including conservation laws, Boltzmann equation and Prandtl equation. In particular, he introduced the Liu-Yang functional with Tai-Ping Liu; he and collaborators introduced a macro-micro decomposition for the Boltzmann equation that unifies the classical Hilbert and Chapman-Enskog expansions; he and collaborators established the well-posedness of Prandtl equation in Sobolev space under Oleinik’s monotonicity condition and in optimal Gevrey function space without any structural assumption. He has authored more than 180 research papers with most published in leading journals of mathematics, such as Journal of the American Mathematical Society, Journal of European Mathematical Society, Journal de Mathématiques Pure et Appliquées. He has supervised 18 PhD students and 6 Postdocs.

Tong Yang has been serving as a founding Editor-in-Chief of Kinetic and Related Models since 2008, and as an Editor-in-Chief of Analysis and Applications (2013-2017). He also belongs to the editorial advisory board of the London Mathematical Society and the editorial board of SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis. He was the President of the Hong Kong Mathematical Society (2016-2020) and is an Officer in the Division of Mathematics of the European Academy of Sciences (2019-present).
