Mauro Tulli - Biography#


Mauro Tulli obtained his degree in Greek Literature in July 1981, and his Diploma in Classical Philology in July 1983 at the University of Rome "Sapienza". From 1983 to 1986, disciple of the PhD Course in Classical Philology at the University of Florence, in September 1987, he disputed his dissertation. From 1992 to 1995, he was awarded with the Humboldt- Stiftung Scholarship at the University of Cologne and at the University of Würzburg.

From 1998 to 2006 he was Associate Professor of Greek Literature and from 2006, Full Professor of Greek Literature at the University of Pisa. From 2009 to 2012, he served as the President of the “Corso di Laurea in Lettere”, from 2012 to 2016 as the Director of the Department "Filologia, Letteratura e Linguistica", as well as a Member of the Academic Senate at the University of Pisa. From 2020 to 2022 he was President of the PhD Programme “Scienze dell’Antichità e Archeologia”.

From 2001-2003 to 2007-2009, from 2023 to date, Scientific Director of Pisa Research Unit (B) and in 2009-2011 Scientific Director of National Research Group (A) of Projects on Rhetoric, Literature and Philosophy in the Hellenistic period financed by the Ministry of Research.

He is the Director of the Series "Diotima" published by Nomos Verlag, of the Series ”Biblioteca di Studi Antichi” (BSA) published by Giardini Editori, of the Series "La Scuola di Epicuro" published by Bibliopolis and of the Journals “Cronache Ercolanesi” and "Philologia Philosophica", Vice-Director of the Journal “Studi Classici e Orientali” (SCO) and member of the Scientific Board of the Journal “Prometheus”.

From 2013 to 2019 President of the "Consulta Universitaria del Greco" (CUG) and in 2023 co-founder and President of the "Associazione To Hellenikon" (TH). From 2006 to 2016 President of the Pisa Delegation of the “Associazione Italiana di Cultura Classica” (AICC), he is also Member of the “Comitato Istituzionale dei Garanti per la Cultura Classica” at the Ministry of Education since 2014. He is Member and from 2012 to 2022 President of the “Centro Interuniversitario Greco-Arabo-Latino, Incontro di Culture" (GrAL). From 2010 Member of the "Centro Internazionale per lo Studio dei Papiri Ercolanesi" (CISPE), since 2013 he is Member of the Executive Board. He is co-founder of the “International Plato Society” (IPS) and now he is Member of the Advisory Board: from 2002 to 2007 he served as Coordinator of the Editorial Board, from 2007 to 2010 as Member of the Executive Board, from 2010 to 2013 as President.

He is Member of the "Consiglio Universitario Nazionale" (CUN) and from 2023 Member of the Executive Board. At the University of Pisa he is "Delegato del Rettore per i rapporti con le istituzioni universitarie nazionali".

From 1984 to date, he has held lectures in Italy at Bari, Bologna, Chieti, Florence, Macerata, Milan “Statale”, Naples "Federico II”, Parma, Pavia, Perugia, Potenza, Rome “Sapienza”, Rome “Tor Vergata”, Rome “Tre”, Salerno, Trent, Venice, Viterbo, and abroad, at Aix-en-Provence, Buenos Aires, Frankfurt, Lund, Rio de Janeiro, Santiago, São Paulo, and Vilnius.

He has attended as invited speaker several congresses in Pisa and Rome “Tor Vergata” (Research Projects), in Piacenza, Como, and Ann Arbor (on Ethics and Soul in Plato), in Parma and Würzburg (on Epicureanism), in Bamberg (on the Corpus of Plato), in Würzburg (on Biography in Peripatos), in Bari and Barcelona (on the Form of the Dialogue), in Tübingen (on Plato as a Painter), in Nice (on the Mimesis in the Archaic and Classical Literature), in São Paulo and Yokohama (on Politics and Rhetoric in Plato), in Rio de Janeiro (on the Politeia), in Brasilia (on Characters and Style in Plato), in Tbilisi (on Plato in Interdisciplinary Context), in Pisa Scuola Normale and Grenoble (on the Quotation in Plato), in Venice (for the Humboldt-Stiftung Association), in Rome “Sapienza” (on the Poetics of Homer and Hesiod), in Naples (on Atlantis), in Paestum (on Parmenides).
