Kostas Triantis - Biography#
After his research training, MSc and PhD at the Biology Department (University of Crete) and the Natural History Museum of Crete (Greece) (1996-2006), Kostas worked as a post-doc at the Department of Biology (University of Patras; 2006-2007). He was then awarded a Marie Curie Fellowship (EIF) at the Oxford University Centre for the Environment (OUCE), (2007-2008). From November 2008 Kostas worked as a post-doc at the Azorean Biodiversity Group (CITA-A, University of Azores, Terceira) and from August 2008 to 2015 he was a Visiting Research Associate of the School of Geography (University of Oxford) as a member of the Biodiversity, Ecosystems and Conservation research cluster. He was also Visiting Professor at the University of Bayreuth (Department of Biogeography; 2011). From August (2012) to April (2015) he was Special Secretary for Water at the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change. Since April of 2019 he is Associate Professor at the Department of Biology of the University of Athens
Kostas is a biogeographer with broad interests in island biogeography, macroecology, community ecology, evolution, and conservation biology. His research interests span diverse themes such as diversity theory, species-area relationship, scale in ecological and biogeographical analysis, ecological modelling and environmental heterogeneity. He is also an authority in the systematics and biogeography of a number of taxa of the Aegean Islands (Greece), such as land snails.
Kostas has published more than 70 peer-review articles and has co-edited two books. He has been invited as a speaker to various meeting and symposia such as:
Symposium: Evolutionary islands 150 years after Darwin. Leiden, The Netherlands (12-13/02/09), 8th International Association for Landscape Ecology (IALE) Congress, Beijing, China (18/08/2011), Toward Global Standards for Biodiversity Surveys and Checklists Symposium, Yale University, USA (20-23/06/2013) and the 61th Annual Meeting of the Ecological Society of Japan, Hiroshima, Japan (14-18/03/2014).
His recent and ongoing research programmes have involved international collaborations with laboratories in UK, Portugal, Spain and France including the following projects as PI, member or partner:

Kostas is or has been a member the editorial board of three scientific journals. Noteworthy is his participation to the board of Journal of Biogeography the leading journal of biogeography. Kostas acts as regular referee for 56 journals, including Nature, Science, PNAS, Ecology Letters. He has also a long experience with IUCN Red Listing. He is the threat status assessor for more than 200 land snail species from Greece. Reviewer of the threat status evaluation for more than 400 European species and also for 165 species from Oceania.
