David Teira - Biography#


Professor David Teira is a leading European philosopher of science whose work has made sustained and internationally recognised contributions to the philosophy of medicine, philosophy of the social sciences, and the history and philosophy of probability. He currently holds a Chair in Logic and Philosophy of Science at UNED (Madrid) and has served as Professor at Sorbonne Université, alongside long-standing affiliations with University College London and major European research centres.

Professor Teira’s research has reshaped contemporary debates on evidence, bias, and normativity in biomedical and social research. He is especially known for his work on evidence-based medicine, clinical trials and pharmaceutical regulation, combining philosophical analysis with historically and institutionally informed approaches. His publications appear in leading international journals such as The British Journal for the Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Science, Synthese, Biology and Philosophy and European Journal for Philosophy of Science. His work is characterised by a sustained engagement with real-world scientific and policy practices.

Professor Teira has played a formative role in developing philosophy of medicine as a distinct and internationally connected field. He has co-edited influential journal issues and volumes, contributed authoritative handbook chapters, and supervised or examined numerous doctoral dissertations across Europe and America. His research leadership is evidenced by his role as principal investigator on multiple nationally funded projects.

Beyond research, Professor Teira has provided exceptional service to the scholarly community. He is Editor-in-Chief of BSPS Open, serves on the editorial boards of several leading journals, and has held elected positions in major international societies, including the European Philosophy of Science Association and the Spanish Society for Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science (currently Chair). He is also deeply committed to open science, having contributed to policy initiatives on open-access publishing and research integrity.
