Peter Siersema - Biography#


Peter Siersema (1959) graduated with Honors in Medicine in 1985 at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He specialized in Internal Medicine and in Gastroenterology at the same university and received his registration as gastroenterologist in 1995. In 1993 het defended his PhD-thesis, entitled "The Liver in Uroporphyria: A Biochemical and Morphological Study" at the Erasmus University Rotterdam

At the same time, Peter Siersema started his research group focusing on minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of early- and end-stage GI cancer. Specific topics include the early detection and treatment of esophageal cancer, optimizing palliative care in malignant obstruction of the GI tract and the development and evaluation of innovative techniques and devices in GI endoscopy GI endoscopy. He has supervised or co-supervised more than 60 PhD-students and has authored more than 750 peer-reviewed papers and chapters in books and has edited more than 20 books. In his research group, he currently supervises or co-supervises 15 PhD-students.

Peter Siersema is the current Director of the Endoscopy Center and Co-Director of the Radboud Technology Center – Clinical Studies at the Radboud University Medical Center, Nijmegen, The Netherlands. He is the Past-President of the Dutch Society of Gastroenterology and Member of the Scientific Committee of the Dutch Upper GI Cancer Audit. On an international level, he is Past-President of the European Society for Diseases of Esophagus (ESDE) and member of the Governing Board of the European Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE). Peter Siersema is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Endoscopy (Impact Factor 2021: 10.093).
