Orly Shenker - Biography#


Orly Shenker holds a PhD in the Philosophy of Science (1997) from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (with Itamar Pitowsky). After post doctoral fellowships in Cambridge (1997) and Oxford (1998) and then at the Hebrew University (1999) and Haifa (2000), she was a Lecturer at London School of Economics, department of philosophy (2000-2002). In 2010 she joined the Hebrew University’s Program in History and Philosophy of Science as Senior Lecturer, where in 2020 she became a full Professor, and since 2017 she holds the Eleanor Roosevelt Chair in History and Philosophy of Science.

Since 2013 she is director of the Sidney M. Edelstein Center for History and Philosophy of Science, Technology and Medicine, where she has initiated international conferences and lectures series, and established an international Senior Fellowship program that serves to strengthen collaboration with universities and research centers worldwide.
She is the founder and first president (since 2016) of “The Pond: Network of Philosophy of Science around the Mediterranean,” promoting collaboration between academics at all levels in this region.

She is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of The Jerusalem Series in Philosophy and History of Science (Springer Verlag).

She has won several research grants, from the Israel Science Foundation and the German-Israeli Foundation, as well as a grant from Lockheed-Martin for applying ideas, originating from philosophy of physics, for technological innovations.

Since 2020 she is a member of the International Relations committee of the Philosophy of Science Association (PSA).
