Kenneth Sheedy - Biography#
Kenneth Sheedy is the founding director of the Australian Centre for Ancient Numismatic Studies at Macquarie University (since 2000) and associate Professor in ancient world archaeology in the department of History and Archaeology. He was the Deputy Director of the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens (1991 - 1996) where he was responsible for the work of the school in Greece. His particular area of research focus is ancient Greek numismatics, together with Attic and Cycladic history and archaeology (he currently works in collaboration with Prof S. Pike in a study of early Naxian sculpture). He will shortly publish a new study of archaic Athenian coinage (with Dr G. Davis). His work with Athenian Coinage has been in cooperation with the Athens Numismatic Museum (which held an exhibition on the project). He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, and is the representative of the Academy for the SNG Australia Project at the IUA. He has been a visiting lecturer In Sweden and held visiting scholarship positions in the UK and in the USA. He is team leader in joint programs with the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, using pioneering methods of neutron analysis in numismatics, in studies of Italian incuse coinage, methods of ancient plating and the technology of Lydian plated electrum.
