Matthias Schwab - Biography#

After the study of medicine at the University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, followed by fellowships in Children's Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology with board certifications for both disciplines, Matthias Schwab has held positions at the Dr. Margarete Fischer-Bosch-Institute of Clinical Pharmacology, Stuttgart, Germany, and was visiting professor at St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, US, Dept. of Pharmaceutical Sciences. In 2006 and in 2010 he declined two offers for Full Professorship and Chair for Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, and at Karolinska Institute Stockholm, Sweden.

Since 2007, Matthias Schwab is chair of Clinical Pharmacology at the University Tuebingen and director of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology, University Hospital Tuebingen and the Dr. Margarete Fischer-Bosch-Institute of Clinical Pharmacology at Robert-Bosch-Hospital in Stuttgart, Germany. He heads the Interfaculty Center for Pharmacogenomics and Drug Research (ICEPHA), University Tuebingen. Since 2018 he is adjunct professor at the Department of Clinical Pharmacology at the Yerevan State Medical University, Armenia.

Schwab’s scientific interests focus on personalized medicine and pharmacogenomics (PGx) and the contribution of ADME genes for better understanding of drug response. This comprises the elucidation of underlying mechanisms for adverse drug reactions including the application of various omics-technologies (e.g. genomics, epigenomics, metabonomics). He is involved in major national and international programs for the clinical implementation of PGx research findings and acts as principle investigator of several academically initiated drug trials. Based on his training as pediatrician and his qualification as pediatric clinical pharmacologist he contributes to international pediatric programs (e.g. IMI2 conect4children - Collaborative network for European clinical trials for children).

Schwab received numerous awards, and is member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and of the Academy of Sciences and Literature, Mainz, Germany. His scientific accomplishments result in more than 400 peer reviewed publications. He has an h-index of 95 by Web of Science -Clarivate Analytics and is considered among the top 1 % of highly cited researchers in the Web of Science Group-Clarivate Analytics in 2021, 2020, 2018 and 2015/2016.

He serves as Editor-in-Chief of Pharmacogenetics & Genomics, Drug Research, and as Section Editor of Genome Medicine.
