In 1995 I created the ETEP research group (Etiology and Therapeutics of Periodontal and Peri-implant Diseases), officially recognized by the Complutense University since 2005 and re-accredited in 2021 by the Ministry of Science and Innovation with an excellent rating score (94). This group consists of 19 faculty members, six contracted researchers, 12 PhD doctoral students and 4 unaffiliated external researchers. It is located within the Faculty of Odontology , comprising a full equipped clinical research centre and five basic science laboratories to support clinical research (oral microbiology, periodontal biochemistry, molecular biology, oral biofilm, histology and cell cultures). It has 5 independent lines of research: 1) Effectiveness of interventions with dental implants and bone regeneration protocols; 2) Effectiveness of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions in the management of periodontal and peri-implant diseases; 3) Systemic repercussions of periodontal diseases 4) Etiology and pathogenesis of periodontal and peri-implant diseases; 5) Biomaterials and engineering protocols in bone and periodontal regeneration. All these lines, mainly clinical research, have cohesive and complementary objectives. In the last 10 years, the ETEP group under my direction has published 243 scientific publications indexed in JCR, with 78% in Q1 of the corresponding area and 27% of them in D1. Likewise, in this period 2 patents have been generated (Reference: EP16382453.5 and in 2016 the ETEP Reseach Group received the 2nd prize for Technology and Knowledge Transfer from the UCM in the Biomedical and Health Sciences category.

Since its inception, the group has participated continuously in 38 research projects obtained through national and international competitive funding, and with an accumulated funding of around €2,000,000. Of these, 13 are international competitive projects [including two from the European Commission, the Maxibone (H2020) project (2018 - 2022) of which I am the coordinator of a workpackage and the clinical trial and the NOMAD project (CA_Horizon Europe 2022 - 2026), fourteen national projects (among which two stand out FIS, three MINECO and four from the Ministry of Education and Science), four from regional calls, two Santander-Complutense Research Projects and four financial contributions for the consolidation of the ETEP Research Group at the UCM). The group has also obtained around €4,500,000 in 110 projects-contracts with companies or external promoters (Art. 83). I currently direct 4 extraordinary chairs between the UCM and relevant companies in Dentistry (Straumann, Dentsply, Mozo Grau and Kockner) with an annual budget of €160,000.

I develop an important editorial activity having been Associate Editor of the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, uninterruptedly since 2002. This journal is the 1st in the ranking of Dentistry with an IF=8.79. I am also the Associate Editor of the Journal of Periodontal Research (Q1) and member of the editorial committee of the scientific journals (Journal of Periodontology, Clinical Oral Implant Research, Clinical Oral Investigations, International Journal of Implantology, Journal of Dental Research) all of them in Q1 of the JCR. In the last 5 years I have participated as a guest speaker in more than 250 scientific events, most of them in the international field. I am the Cover Editor of the most influential Textbook in the world in the specialization of Periodontology (Clinical Periodontology and Implant Dentistry 7th edition) (Wiley, Oxford 2021)
