Wolfgang Sandberger - Biography#


Wolfgang Sandberger, born in 1961, studied music (Violoncello under Eckhard Stahl) at Osnabrück Conservatory and Music Academy Hannover. He completed a Master’s degree in musicology, philosophy, and history in Münster and Hamburg, followed by a PhD in musicology. Since 1999, he has been professor for musicology and director of the Brahms-Institut at Musikhochschule Lübeck. He is a leading specialist in German music history, 17th to 19th centuries. Sandberger is president of the Göttinger Händelgesellschaft, deputy chairman of the Musikgeschichtliche Kommission, member of the board of Johannes Brahms Gesamtausgabe (Munich), member of the board of trustees, Göttingen Handel Festival, as well as member of the board, International Dieterich Buxtehude Society. He is driving force behind digitization projects in music, for which he secured grants of more than 1 million €, in particular from the German Research Fund (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) and the Schleswig-Holstein state government. He has also done outreach work, in the same spirit and mainly related to the work of Brahms, with various radio stations.
