Paweł Rowiński - Biography#


Paweł M.Rowiński is a Professor at the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He studied applied mathematics at the University of Warsaw (M.Sc.1988), and subsequently devoted his career to the hydrosciences (PhD 1995 and Habilitation 2002): In the 90ties a visiting scholar at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, at the Central European University in Budapest, at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, University of California, Santa Barbara; the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis; and at the Institut für Gewässerökologie und Binnenfischerei in Berlin.

Throughout his scientific career, he has been associated with the Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences, of which he served as Director (2008-2015 and since 2013). He supervised 7 PHD graduates. Coordinated several HL grants and programs in Poland and internationally.

In Poland, he is a highly regarded personality, as exemplified by his election in 2010 to the Polish Academy of Sciences, of which he was twice elected Vice President (2015 - 2022). At the same time, he was elected a Fellow of the Warsaw Scientific Society.

In June 2024, he was elected President of the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities (ALLEA). He also serves on the Board of SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) and, since January 2026, has been elected its Vice Chair.

He is a co-founder and former Head of the Board of Directors of the Earth and Planetary Research Centre GEOPLANET (2009 - 2015) and has again held this position since 2024. He also initiated the accession of the GeoPlanet Centre to GEO8 – the European Earth Sciences Research Alliance. His research interests include mathematical methods in geophysics, environmental hydrodynamics, experimental studies of hydrological processes, and the impacts of climate change on water resources.

Prof. Rowiński is Editor-in-Chief of the Springer book series GeoPlanet: Earth and Planetary Sciences and serves as an Associate Editor for several leading scientific journals. He is Chair of the European Division of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR).

In various capacities, he has advised decision-makers at the national and international levels. Recently, he served as Chair of the Advisory Expert Group on Flood Recovery at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister of Poland (2025) and, since October 2025, as Chair of the Advisory Expert Group on Flood Recovery and Spatial Planning at the Ministry of the Interior and Administration. Since 2024, he has also been a member of the Polish Polar Policy Team at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In addition, he serves on numerous expert and advisory bodies, including as Chair of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Hydroengineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences (2023 - 2026) and Chair of the Committee of Water Sciences and Water Management of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
