Nicholas A. Peppas - Biography#

Nicholas A. Peppas’s work in biomaterials, drug delivery, notechnology and polymer physics follows a multidisciplinary approach by blending modern molecular and cellular biology with engineering principles to design the next-generation of drug release systems for treatment of diabetes, autoimmune and cardiovascular diseases, medical systems and devices. Over the past 42 years he has set the fundamentals and rational design of biomedical systems and developed models of drug and protein diffusion in controlled release devices and biological tissues. In 2012 he received the Founders Award of the Nat. Acad. of Engineering, the highest recognition of the Academy, for these contributions to the field. In 2018 he received the Adam Yarmolinsky Award of the Nat. Acad. of Medicine.

He is a member of the NAE, the NAM, the Am. Acad. of Arts and Sciences, the Nat. Acad. of Inventors, the Chinese Acad. of Engineering, the Canadian Acad. of Engineering, the Nat. Acad. of France, the Royal Acad. of Spain, the Acad. of Athens and the Acad. of Medicine, Engineering, and Science of Texas. He has served as President of the International Union of Societies of Biomaterials Science and Engineering, Chair of the Engineering Section of the Am. Assoc. Adv. Sci., Chair of the Council of BME Chairs, President of the Soc. for Biomaterials, and the Controlled Release Soc. He is the Editor of the journal “Regenerative Biomaterials”, and Associate Editor of the “ScienceAdvances”. He is a fellow of AAAS, AIChE, APS, ACS, MRS, SFB, BMES, AIMBE, CRS, AAPS, and ASEE.

He holds a Dipl. Eng. from the NTU of Athens (1971), a Sc.D. from MIT (1973), honorary doctorates from the Universities of Ghent (Belgium), Parma (Italy), Athens (Greece), Ljubljana (Slovenia), Patras (Greece), National Technical University of Athens (Greece), and University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain), and Honorary Professorships at Sichuan University, Peking Union Medical College, the PLA Hospital and Medical School, and Beihang University in Beijing, China.
