Prof. Peers has pioneered research in the molecular mechanisms of oxygen sensing which has led to major discoveries in the fields of carotid body chemoreception, the association of hypoxia with Alzheimer’s disease and more recently the physiological and pathological effects of other gases (carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide) in the brain and cardiovascular systems.

He is one of the International leaders in the field of chemosensitive ion channels; he has published in major journals (e.g. Science, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA, FASEB J etc.)
