Gabriella Pasi - Biography#


Gabriella Pasi received her Laurea Degree (BSc+MSc) in Computer Science from the University of Milan (1985) and a PhD in Computer Science from the Université de Rennes (1998). She was a researcher at the Italian National Research Council (1985–2005) and Associate Professor at the University of Milano-Bicocca (2005 - 2015). Since 2015, she has been Full Professor at Milano-Bicocca, serving as Department Director (2018 - 2024) and Vice-Rector for International Relations (2019–2025), and currently she is Rector’s Delegate as Local Coordinator of the European Alliance INVEST. Since 2019, she is Adjunct Chair at the Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology, India.

In 2021, she was appointed to the steering committee of the Italian national initiative Repubblica Digitale, aimed at enhancing digital skills, and as a representative for the Ministry of University and Research (MUR). Since October 2023, she serves as Information Guarantor for ANSA, Italy’s leading news agency. Her research focuses on Natural Language Processing (NLP), particularly statistical approaches. She has made significant contributions to Information Retrieval, contextualization and personalization in information access systems, and context-aware adaptation of Large Language Models (LLMs) using parameter-efficient methods to enhance flexibility and scalability. She also addresses challenges in detecting mis- and disinformation in textual content, while pursuing research in knowledge representation and reasoning. She has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications and led numerous funded research projects, including two Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Networks. Among her recognitions is the 2023 Outstanding Research Contributions Award from the Web Intelligence Consortium. She has served as Program Chair and Senior Area Chair for leading international conferences, is Associate Editor of several journals, and is co-founder and co-director of the Milan unit of ELLIS (European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems). She has been a member of the Panel of Experts for the ERC Starting and Consolidators Grants. From 2019 to 2022 she was Chair of the Emergent Technology Technical Committee of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society.
