RESEARCH ACHIEVEMENTS

Åslaug Ommundsen has been active in the research of Latin medieval book culture and fragment studies in Norway since 2003, and was in 2012 awarded the Bergen Research Foundation Starting Grant for Young Researchers for the project From manuscript fragments to book history (2012-2017) to explore the different international impulses and the impact on the development of Norwegian book production. Through the grant she led a team of fragment researcher at the University of Bergen while actively participating in established milieus for manuscript and fragment studies outside the Nordic countries. Her research has resulted in publications on saints’ cult, liturgical books and psalters, monasticism, and Latin education in the North. Ommundsen was in 2017, immediately after the employment as Professor of Medieval Latin at the University of Bergen, given the task of establishing a Medieval Research Cluster and take on responsibility as Academic director. The position involved collaboration with a number of different institutions in higher education, the museum sector and heritage management. Ommundsen was also the leader of the Research Group for Medieval Philology at the University of Bergen between 2021 and 2024. In 2024 she served as research coordinator at the Department for Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies, as well as deputy Head of Department. In October 2024 she was, together with three colleagues, Tuomas Heikkilä, Matthew Collins and Lars Boje Mortensen, awarded an ERC Synergy Grant to research Nordic manuscript fragments as sources to the European learned networks of the Middle Ages (CODICUM, 2025 - 2031)
