Education: BA Iceland, DPhil Oxford

Career: Lecturer in Icelandic Language and Literature, University College London (1990-93); Lecturer, Associate Professor and (since 2004) Professor of Medieval Icelandic Literature, University of Iceland (1993-present); Director, Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies (2009-present)

International Professional activities include membership of of the Governing Council of the European Science Foundation, chair of NordForsk (the Nordic Science Insititution), and membership of the Board of Fróðskaparsetur (Unversity of the Faroe Islands)

International Honours: Order of the White Rose of Finland (awarded by the President), Royal Norwegian Order of Merit (awarded by the King), Order of the Dannebrog (awarded by the Queen), Fellow of Gustav Adolfs Akademien, Fellow of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters

Publications: Two monographs in English, plus substantial editorial contributions to six volumes of Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages.
