Current Research Interests

I am currently the holder of a two-year Research Fellowship award from the Leverhulme Trust for the completion of my book 'The Tiger in the Smoke: Post-War British Visual Culture, 1945-60.'

I am also co-Director of the History and Theory of Photography Research Centre at Birkbeck, which has a programme of lectures, seminars and reading groups and is the centre for research on photography in the University.

In 2013 I was appointed Visiting Professor of History of Art at Gresham College in London and I have been delivering a series of lectures on fashion, art and modernity in the mid-19th century. (Lectures are available on the Gresham College website http://www.gresham.ac.uk.

I continue to publish on aspects of nineteenth-century art and on the aesthetics of sport. I will be co-curating an exhibition called 'The Fallen Woman' at the Foundling Museum, London in September 2015.
