Graham Murdock - Biography#


After having a BSc Sociology First Class Honours [London School of Economics,1967] and an MA Sociology of Art and Literature [University of Sussex, 1968], Graham Murdock became a Research Assistant and subsequently Research Associate and Research Fellow at the Centre for Mass Communication Research [Leicester University, 1968-1990], a Senior Lecturer in Sociology [Department of Social Sciences, Loughborough University, 1990-1], a Reader in the Sociology of Culture [Loughborough , 1991-2011], followed by his appointment as Professor of Culture and Economy Department of Social Sciences at Loughborough University. During his impressive academic career Murdock published widely in the field of political economy of media and communications, and more widely on various aspects of communications/media/cultural industries, democracy and the public sphere (cf. ideas on media and commons; media and risk society; participation and exclusion in the e-society). He obtained many research grants, is an often invited keynote speaker, and he is considered a key scholar in the field of critical media and communication studies.
