Education

• 1976: BA degree in mathematics (first), King's College Cambridge

At GEC Steve contributed to the EU projects ESPRIT and VOILA. He led the UoR contribution to the EU project Advisor (2000-2003) on video surveillance. Grant agreement ID: IST-1999-11287, and also led the UoR contribution to the EU project Anfas (1999-2003) on data fusion for flood analysis and decision support, IST-1999-11676. In 1993-1995 Steve was seconded from GEC to the Department of Engineering Science, University of Oxford, as a Royal Society/EPSRC Industrial Research Fellow.

Steve has collaborated with Chinese researchers at i) National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition, CAS Beijing (visiting professor), ii) Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xian (guest professor), iii) Zhongyuan University of Technology, Zhengzhou (High End Foreign Experts Programme), iv) Wenzhou University, Wenzhou, and v) Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan.

Steve's research interests are camera calibration, visual surveillance, tracking, filtering, applications of projective geometry to computer vision and applications of probability, statistics and information theory to computer vision. He has supervised 12 PhD students and been external examiner for PhD theses at Queen Mary College, Oxford University, Imperial College, King's College, London, Lund University (Sweden), Sheffield University and Southampton University. He is the author or co-author of more than 200 scientific publications and one book. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society. He received the Koenderink Prize in 2008 at the European Conference on Computer Vision.
