Yonglong Lu - Biography#


Dr. Yonglong Lu is a Chair Professor of Xiamen University, and a Distinguished Professor of Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences (RCEES), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS); Chair of Regional Ecological Risk Assessment and Environmental Management Group at RCEES, CAS; He is also a Professor of University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), and an Affiliate Professor of Renmin University of China, University of Science and Technology of China, and Auburn University, USA. He used to be the Co-Director of RCEES,CAS; Director General, Bureau of International Cooperation, CAS; before that Deputy Director General, Bureau of Planning and Finance, CAS; and Director, Sino-Canadian High-tech Center of Resources and Environment.

Dr. Lu is a Fellow of TWAS (The World Academy of Sciences) elected in 2012; a foreign member of Academia Europaea (elected in 2019); past President of Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE); President of Pacific Science Association (PSA); Member of International Resource Panel, United Nations Environment Program (UNEP/IRP); Science Advisor of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN); former member of Committee on Scientific Planning and Review, International Council for Sciences (ICSU/CSPR); Vice President of Ecological Society of China; Chair of Committee on Ecology and Environmental Sciences, Chinese Society for Sustainable Development. He also serves as a Science Advisor to UNESCO Biotechnology Research Center, National Research Institute of Humanity and Nature (RIHN) of Japan, and a jury member for the category of Ecology and Conservation Biology, BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Awards. He has also served as a review panel member for UK National Environmental Research Council (NERC), and European Research Council. He was an international review panelist for both Future Earth and UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the two biggest international initiatives launched by International Science Council, United Nations, and other international organizations.

Prof. Lu received his B.Sc in agricultural engineering and management from Anhui Agricultural University in 1985, M.Sc in agricultural systems engineering and management from China Agricultural University in 1988, and Ph.D. in resource and environmental economics from Renmin University of China in 2001. He has maintained a cooperation partnership with Urban System Consult in Germany; University College London, Lancaster University, Center of Ecology and Hydrology, and James Hutton Institute in UK; Free University Brussels in Belgium; Wageningen University, Utrecht University, and Free University Amsterdam in the Netherlands; Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology in Switzerland; the University of Oslo, and University of Science and Technology in Norway; International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria; Michigan State University in USA, US National Academy of Sciences, Auburn University in USA; Memorial University of Newfoundland, and University of Saskatchewan in Canada.

Dr. Lu has a wide range of research interests including ecological impacts and risk assessment of emerging pollutants, pollution and climate change interaction, sustainable coastal ecosystems management, urban ecological planning and assessment, environmental management and emergency response, and environmental technology innovation and diffusion policies. He has published more than 350 papers in the above fields in international and domestic peer reviewed journals including Science, Nature, Science Advances,PNAS,Environment International, Nano Today, ISME Journal, Renewable and Sustainable Reviews, Environmental Science and Technology, Environmental Pollution, Chemosphere, Environmental Science and Policy, Environmental Science and Health, Energy Policy, Journal of Environmental Quality, Journal of Hazardous Materials, Environmental Monitor and Assessment, AMBIO, Journal of Environmental Management, Environmental Management, and Science of Total Environment. He has authored or co-authored 17 books on “Encyclopedia of Environmental Management”, “Contemporary Environmental Management”, “Urban Ecological Development: Research and Application”, “Science-based Decision Making to Reduce Persistent Organic Pollutants”, “Policy Mechanisms for Environmental Technology Innovation and Commercialization”, “Environmental Management: Compartmental Approach”, “Environmental Management: Ecosystem Approach”, “Environmental Management: Sustainable Development Instruments”, “Strategic Framework for Economic Sustainable Development in China”, “Energy and Environmental Policy in the Context of Globalization”, “Urban Sustainability and Environmental Enhancement”, “Regional Economy and Human Resource Development”, “Decision Support System for Urban Ecological Regulation”, “Towards a Sustainable City: Method of Urban Ecological Planning and Its Application”. His papers and books have been widely cited and appreciated with some of them listed as classical citations. He is the founding Editor-in-Chief of Ecosystem Health and Sustainability (EHS) jointly appointed by the Ecological Societies of America and China through a global search process, an Associate Editor of Science Advances, and the founder and an Associate Editor of Environmental Development: Transdisciplinary Journal of SCOPE, and an editorial or advisory board member of Environmental Innovation and Societal Transformation, Journal of Sustainability Research, Chemistry and Ecology, and other peer-reviewed journals. He has also been invited to be a peer reviewer for some twenty internationally known journals such as PNAS, Science Advances, Nature family journals, Environmental Science and Technology, Environment International, Environmental Pollution, Journal of Environmental Quality, Chemosphere, Ecological Modeling, Environmental Science and Policy, Energy Policy, Journal of Hazardous Materials, Science of Total Environment, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, and Journal of Environmental Management. He was the Guest Editor of a supplementary issue of Science magazine “Science in the Chinese Academy of Sciences” (2012) which was presented as a gift to the Chinese Premier Keqiang Li by then Science Editor-in-Chief Dr. Marcia McNart. Prof. Lu has also edited special issues for Chemosphere, Environmental Geochemistry and Health, and Journal of Environmental Sciences.

Dr. Lu has been active in the coordination of international activities, being involved in organizing international academic symposia, forums, or conferences many times in the fields of ecology, environmental science and management, and sustainable development. He served as an Executive Project Leader of UNESCO CERP (cooperative ecological research project) on urban ecosystem studies from 1988-1995, Director of Sino-Canadian High-tech Center of Resource and Environment (SCH-CORE) for promoting R & D and commercialization of resource and environmental technologies from 1995-2001, Director General for International Cooperation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences from 2007-2012, and chair or council member or secretary-general for several environment-related international organizations as introduced above. He has been invited more than 70 times by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Asia and Pacific Economic Council (APEC), International Council for Science (ICSU), Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE), Inter-Academy Council ( IAC) , the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) and International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) to make presentations or keynote speeches at international conferences or forums, and to visit some 40 countries for cooperative research and academic exchange. As an international expert, he has been involved in many programs of ICSU, PSA (Pacific Science Association), IAP, IAC and TWAS for promoting science and technology capacities in China and the world.

Prof. Lu has been a project leader/coordinator or chief scientist for some 50 national or international cooperative projects supported by UNESCO MAB Program, UNEP, National Key R & D Program, National Basic Research Program (973), National Scientific Support Program, National Research Program for International Cooperation, CAS Knowledge Innovation Program, National Natural Science Foundation, Bilateral or Multilateral Cooperation Agreements, and International Charitable Foundations. He has also served on several expert consultation groups involved in science and technology, and environmental decision-making at various levels of the Chinese government. He has been involved in formulating China's Agenda 21, incorporating the Agenda into the National Social and Economic Development Plan, and carrying out its subsequent implementation activities. He has been an important part for formulating China’s National Long and Mid Term Science and Technology Development Plan (Vision 2020), “Eleventh-five Year” (2006-2010) Capacity Building Plan for Science and Technology Development in China, (2006-2010) National Technology Commercialization Plan, Guidelines for Building Eco-Civilization in China, and National Implementation of UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He took the responsibility for drafting the long and mid-term strategic plan for the Chinese Academy of Sciences for a long time. He was also a part of review mission on National Environmental Technology and Equipment Research and Development Plan, and National Implementation Plan for Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, etc.

Because of his academic achievements, Dr. Lu has obtained various awards and honors from the State Council of China, Chinese Academy of Sciences and international organizations he has worked with. The major awards and honors include the 2nd and 3rd Prize for Advancement of Science and Technology by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1993 and 1994, Outstanding Young Environmental Scientist Award by the Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences in 1998, CAS- BHP Billiton Award for Scientific Research in 2005, the 2nd National Prize for Advancement of Science and Technology in 2007, Excellent Graduate Supervisor Award by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2014, SCOPE Distinguished Achievement Award in 2014, National Award for Outstanding Young and Middle Aged Scientist in 2014, Green Design International Contribution Award in 2016, the 1st Prize in Science and Technology Promotion and Development by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2018, and Scientific Chinese Outstanding Contribution Award in 2019.
