Fenrong Liu - Biography#


Professor Fenrong Liu holds the distinguished positions of Changjiang Professor at Tsinghua University and the Amsterdam-China Logic Chair at the University of Amsterdam's Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC). Her career exemplifies sustained excellence in bridging Eastern and Western logical traditions while pioneering interdisciplinary approaches in philosophical logic. Professor Liu's academic journey spans Chinese and European institutions. After completing her BA, MA, and initial PhD in philosophy at Chinese universities (1992-2001), she pursued advanced studies at the University of Amsterdam, earning a Master of Logic (2004) and PhD in Logic (2008). Her career progressed from Assistant Researcher in 2001 through Associate Professor in 2005 at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences to Full Professor at Tsinghua University in December 2011. In 2016, she received the Distinguished Changjiang Professorship from the Ministry of Education in China, it is one of China's highest academic honors.

Professor Liu's research spans dynamic preference logic, social epistemic logic, game logics, the history of logic in ancient China, and neuro-symbolic AI. With currently over 2500 citations (on google scholar), her work is highly cited and her contributions are internationally recognized in our field. She serves as Editor-in-Chief of "Logic in Asia: Studia Logica Library", of the Springer book series 'Short Textbooks in Logic' and the Stanford-CSLI book series 'Small Logic Books'. She serves on editorial boards of top journals such as Synthese, Studia Logica, and as advisory board member of the journal Topoi. Since 2024, Professor Liu is a member of the Institut International de Philosophie and Académie Internationale de Philosophie des Sciences.

As Co-Director of the Tsinghua-Amsterdam Joint Research Center for Logic (established in 2013), Professor Liu has coordinated joint research, organized international conferences, and supervised joint PhD students with European institutions. She founded the LORI workshop series on Logic, Rationality and Interaction in 2007 and the Asian Workshop on Philosophical Logic in 2012. Both are very successful conference series that continue till today. Prof. Liu served on the program committees of numerous international conferences and as Program Chair for the PRICAI-2023 conference and for the DEON conference in 2020/2021. She is currently the Program Chair the 18th Congress of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science and Technology (CLMPST), which takes place at Kobe University in Japan, Aug 23 - 28, 2027.

Professor Liu serves as President of the Beijing Logic Association and Vice-President of the Chinese Association of Logic. She has secured major research grants and edits the Handbook of Logical Thought in China, a landmark comparative study in the history of logic.
