Xuemin Lin - Biography#


Xuemin Lin is a Chair Professor at Shanghai Jiaotong University. He was a UNSW Scientia Professor (a.k.a, Chair/Distinguished Professor) and the Head of Database and Knowledge Research Group in the School of Computer Science and Engineering at UNSW. He was selected as a Fellow of IEEE in 2015. Xuemin's research interests lie in databases, data mining, algorithms, and complexities. Specifically, he is working in the areas of scalable processing and mining of various data, including graph, spatial-temporal, streaming, text and uncertain data. In these areas, Xuemin made outstanding contributions by totally publishing 392 papers (among them over 241 papers are published in the top tier journals and conferences). His papers are also nominated as one of the best papers in ICDE2010 (Spatial), SIGMOD2011 (Text),

ICDE2012 (Spatial Temporal), ICDE2013 (Graph), ICDE2018 (Text). In VLDB 2020, he received the Best Paper Runner-up Award; in SIGMOD 2020, his paper is nominated as one of the four Best Papers and subsequently is selected as SIGMOD2021 research highlight award; in ICDE2016, he received the best paper award; in ICDE2007, his paper received the best student paper award. (Note: SIGMOD, VLDB and ICDE are the world premier conference in Data Management). His papers in Keyword search is nominated as a Spotlight paper in TKDE, Dec, 2011. Xuemin Lin has been working with Key industry for the system development including Alibaba, Microsoft, Google etc.

Xuemin leads his research group in UNSW to be ranked #5 in the world by CS rankings regarding the papers in SIGMOD, VLDB, ICDE, and PODS in the last 10 years. He also has been very successful to mentor and train youngsters. Two of his students/postdocs won excellent youths (overseas) and one was awarded youth Changjiang Professor. In Australia, four of his students/postdocs won ARC DECRA (Distinguished Early Career Researcher of Australia) and all of them consequently won ARC Future Fellowships. His former PhD student also won the Australian National Research Award, Chris Wallace Award.

Xuemin has been very frequently serving as a PC member in SIGMOD, VLDB, ICDE, ICDM, KDD, CIKM, and EDBT. He was a PC co-chair of ICDE2019, and is a PC co-chair of VLDB2022. He is also vice/area/track chairs for various conferences including ICDM2012, ICDE2013, CIKM2014, SIGMOD. He received the honor of outstanding reviewer in KDD2012. He was an associate editor of ACM TODS (2008 - 2014) and IEEE TKDE (Feb 2013 - Jan 2015), and an associate editor-in-Chief of TKDE (2015 - 2016), respectively. Currently, he is the editor-in-Chief of TKDE (Jan 2017 - Dec 2021).
