I led a first teaching delegation to China for three months in 1977, as part of the first academic exchange programme between China and the UK.

Also in 1977, I was one of the five founding members of ICAME (International Computer Archive of Modern and Medieval English), the oldest academic association for corpus linguistics. I was one of the organizers of the 30th.

I took a leading part in the compilation of two well-known corpora of the English Language: the Lancaster-Oslo/Bergen corpus (1970-8) and the British National Corpus (1991-5).

In 2005, I was winner, with co-author Mick Short, of the PALA25 Silver Jubilee Prize for ‘the most influential book in stylistics’ since 1980, for our book Style in Fiction: An Introduction to English Fictional Prose (1981).
