  • From 1987-1994, Larsson was responsible for the molecular genetics part of a project focused on mitochondrial disorders in humans. Mutations of mtDNA were identified in a large number of patients with mitochondrial disorders. The presence of different types of mtDNA mutations was correlated to clinical phenotypes and biochemical and morphological findings in skeletal muscle. The principles for the non-Mendelian inheritance of different heteroplasmic mtDNA mutations were studied in several families. This project resulted in several papers (see publication list) and Larsson presented my thesis "Mitochondrial DNA Mutations and Oxidative Phosphorylation Disorders" October 2, 1992.
