James Lam - Biography#


Professor J. Lam received a BSc (1st Hons.) degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manchester. He then obtained the MPhil and PhD degrees from the University of Cambridge. He is a Croucher Scholar, Croucher Fellow, Distinguished Visiting Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and Cheung Kong Chair Professor. Before joining the University of Hong Kong in 1993, where he is now Chair Professor of Control Engineering, he was a faculty member at the City University of Hong Kong and the University of Melbourne.

Professor Lam is a Chartered Mathematician (CMath), Chartered Scientist (CSci), Chartered Engineer (CEng), Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (FIEEE), Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET), Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications (FIMA), Fellow of Institution of Mechanical Engineers (FIMechE), Fellow of Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (FHKIE), Fellow of Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association (FAAIA), and Distinguished Fellow of International Engineering and Technology Institute. He is an Academician of the International Academy for Systems and Cybernetic Sciences.

He is serving the editorial boards of over 20 journals. In particular, he is Editor-in-Chief of four international journals. These include IET Control Theory and Applications (IET), Journal of The Franklin Institute (Elsevier), Proc. IMechE Part I: Journal of Systems and Control Engineering (Sage), and Franklin Open (Elsevier). He is Subject Editor of Journal of Sound & Vibration (Elsevier) and Associate Editor of Automatica (Elsevier).

His research interests include multi-agent systems, switched systems, positive systems, networked control systems, and vibration control. Professor Lam has published 600+ peer-reviewed journal articles. He is a Highly Cited Researcher in Engineering (2014 to 2020, 8 years), Computer Science (2015), and Cross-Fields (2021). His Web of Science H-index is 102, and Scopus H-index is 108. According to Top 2% Scientists list by Stanford University, he ranked 117 (World) and 8 (National) among the Best Electronic and Electrical Engineering Scientists in 2023.

He has received two prestigious State Natural Science Awards (2015, 2nd position; 2019, 4th position), and the Kimura Best Paper Award of Asian Journal of Control (Wiley) in 2018, the International Journal of Systems Science Prize Paper in 2010.
