Visa Koivunen - Biography#


Visa Koivunen received the D.Sc. (EE) degree (with Honors) from the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Oulu, Oulu, Finland. He received the primus doctor (best graduate) award among the doctoral graduates in years 1989-1994. He is presently the Aalto Distinguished Professor of Aalto University, Espoo, Finland. Koivunen served as an Academy Professor for a 5-year period from 2010 to 2014. In Finland, the academy professors are assigned by the Academy of Finland. Academy Professors are internationally recognised leaders in their fields. The position of Academy Professor is the most distinguished of the research posts funded by the Academy of Finland. The Academy of Finland appoints new Academy Professors each year for a fixed term of five years.

He is a Fellow of the IEEE and EURASIP. He is a member of the Eta Kappa Nu, the honor society of IEEE, promoting excellence in the profession and in education. His research interests include statistical, wireless communications, radar, sensor array and multichannel signal processing, machine learning and data science along with their practical applications. He has published 116 peer-reviewed journal papers, 1 monograph, 16 book chapters; more than a total of 480 scientific papers in international scientific conferences and journals with a total of 15, 188 Google Scholar citations (19.5.2023), an h-index of 60 (https://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=en&user=Yu9GLm0AAAAJ). Koivunen also is the co-inventor of 5 patents (US Patent No. 7787548, US Patent No. 7929937, US Patent No. 7949357, US Patent No. 20090197550 and US Patent No. 20100120467). He has advised 29 doctoral thesis works. He was a principal investigator of the SMARAD Center of Excellence in Research nominated by the Academy of Finland (2002 - 2013).
