Christoph Klein - Biography#
Christoph Klein is Professor of Pediatrics and Chair of the Dr. von Hauner Children’s Hospital at LMU Munich. Trained at premier academic institutions in Munich, Paris, Freiburg, and Boston/MA, he holds an MD, a Master’s degree in Philosophy, and a PhD in Immunology. His academic career spans leading positions in pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital, Hannover Medical School, and since 2011, LMU Munich.
Christoph Klein is internationally recognized for defining novel monogenic disorders of the immune and blood systems and for advancing curative therapies, including pioneering work in hematopoietic stem-cell (gene) therapy and rapid clinical genomics for children. He has authored more than 350 scientific publications (H-index >100, >40,000 citations) and has consistently been a highly cited scientist. His research has been supported by major national and international funders, including the DFG, ERC Advanced Grant, NIH, the Helmsley Charitable Trust.
He has received numerous honors, among them the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize, the William Dameshek Prize (ASH), the Hector Science Award, and major international distinctions. Klein has served on advisory boards and study sections of the German Research Foundation, international funding agencies, and scientific societies, and has coordinated major national and European research networks on rare diseases.
Klein is the founding architect of the global Care-for-Rare Alliance and a co-founder of two recent biomedical spin-offs translating IP into clinical applications. His leadership in pediatrics, immunology, and precision medicine has shaped clinical practice, scientific discovery, and international training in Europe and worldwide.
