Lambertus Kiemeney - Biography#

Lambertus (Bart) Kiemeney started his career as a physical therapist. He obtained his MSc in Biomedical Sciences (major in epidemiology) at the Radboud University (RU) in Nijmegen, the Netherlands (1988). From 1988-1992, he acted as head of the cancer registry department of the Comprehensive Cancer Center in Nijmegen. Simultaneously, he worked on his PhD thesis ‘Prognostic assessment of superficial bladder cancer’ at the Departments of Epidemiology and Urology of the RU. During a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship from the Netherlands Cancer Society he obtained further training in clinical and genetic epidemiology at the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle WA, and the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore MD. In 1994, he returned to Nijmegen for a tenure track position in cancer epidemiology at the Departments of Epidemiology and Urology. In addition, he was part-time research director at the Comprehensive Cancer Center IKO, Nijmegen. In 2003, he was appointed professor of cancer epidemiology at the RU. In 2012, he became director of the Radboud Institute for Health Sciences, one of the three research institutes of the Radboud university medical center (Radboudumc) and in 2013 chair of the Radboudumc Department for Health Evidence. His main research interests lie in the genetic and clinical epidemiology of bladder and prostate cancer. He is active in several strong international collaborations, chair or (board) member of several national and international scientific advisory committees, and coordinator of a large EU 7th FP project on targeted treatment in metastasized renal cell cancer. Bart Kiemeney has (co) authored more than 500 peer-reviewed papers and 25 book chapters. He published the first genome wide association study of bladder cancer.
