Brian Daniel Joseph - Biography#

Brian D. Joseph is Distinguished University Professor of Linguistics, and The Kenneth E. Naylor Professor of South Slavic Linguistics, at The Ohio State University (Columbus, Ohio). His degrees are in Linguistics, from Yale (B.A. 1973), and Harvard (M.A. 1976; Ph.D. 1978). He has held fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the Fulbright Program, and research grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Science Foundation. He holds two honorary doctorates (La Trobe, 2006; Patras, 2008) and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Linguistic Society of America, and a member of the American Philosophical Society and the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo. He served as President of the Linguistic Society of America in 2019.

His research focus is historical linguistics, especially regarding the Greek language from Ancient through Modern, in its genealogical context as an Indo-European language and its geographic context within the Balkans.

He has given over 600 professional presentations since 1975, at local, national, and international conferences, by invitation or by competitive review of abstracts, and at numerous linguistics programs in the US, Australia, and all across Europe (in 20 different European nations) as an invited speaker (including 40 plenary address invitations in the past two decades).

He is author or co-author of 5 books and 1 significant (c. 100-page) on-line resource; editor or co-editor of 20 books, 10 special journal issues, and 3 significant (c. 500-page) on-line resources; author or co-author of over 300 papers, some in conference proceedings and some by invitation as contributions to books, but most as articles in refereed journals, and some 165 reviews and other miscellaneous professional writings.
