- 1981 PhD from London University (Imperial College) with thesis entitled 'The Early Development of Spectroscopy and Astrophysics'. Work supported by University of London Research Scholarship.
- 1982 to present, held the posts at the Royal Institution as listed in section 1.10.
- 2003-2005 President of The Newcomen Society for the History of Engineering and Technology.
- 2006-2008 President of The British Society for the History of Science.
- 2008 (Autumn) Visiting Professor, Centro Simão Mathias de Estudos em História da Ciência, São Paulo.
- 2009-2010 President of the History of Science Section of the British (Science) Association.
- 2009-2013 Council member of Division of History of Science and Technology of the International Union for the History and Philosophy of Science.
In addition at various times James has served or is serving on the committees of the following organisations: Leonardo da Vinci Society, the Society for the History of Alchemy and Chemistry, the British Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Historical Group of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He is also a member of the following organisations: European Society for the History of Science, History of Science Society, Archives and Records Association and The Museums Association.
He is Chair of the National Organising Committee for the XXIVth International Congress for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine to be held in Manchester in July 2013.
Having just finished editing the complete correspondence of Michael Faraday, James is currently working on an extended biographical memoir for the British Academy of the influential historians of science, Rupert Hall (1920-2009) and his wife Marie Boas Hall (1919-2009). He has not yet decided precisely what his next major project will be but it will almost certainly involve a detailed study of how scientific knowledge created in the controlled circumstances of the laboratory can be adapted for technological purposes.
