BA Archaeology and Prehistory University of Sheffield 1992, PhD University of Cambridge 1995 ("Islam, Archaeology and History, a Complex Relationship: The Niger Bend (Mali) Ca.AD 900 - 1250"; Research Fellow St John's College Cambridge 1995-1998; Lecturer (1999-2004), Senior Lecturer and Reader (2004) and Professor of Islamic and African Archaeology (2004 - 2016), University of Manchester; Al-Qasimi Professor of African and Islamic Archaeology, University of Exeter (2016). Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries 2001,Fellow of the Royal Asatic Society 2002, Fellow of the British Academy 2023. Visiting Fellowships include at Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia), Ghana University Legon (Ghana), Jinka University (Ethiopia) and University of East Anglia (UK). Author or co-author of over a dozen books and edited books and 150+ research papers.
