  1. Served twice as Associate Director of the LSA Linguistic Institute (1997 at Cornell and 2005 at MIT-Harvard)
  2. Organized and served, 3 times, as Director of the Summer Institute of Chinese Linguistics (1991, 1997, and 2005).
  3. International Association of Chinese Linguistics (IACL): Chaired a steering committee to create the IACL (in 1991), served as its Executive Secretary (1991-95), Treasurer (1995-99), Vice President (1999-2000), and President (2000-2001).
  4. Founding Editor of the Journal of East Asian Linguistics, an SSCI and A&HCI-indexed journal published by Kluwer/Springer, from 1991, now in its 27th volume.
  5. Principal advisory services for the following institutions (among others):
    1. 21 years (from 1997) on the Academic Advisory Committee for the Institute of Linguistics of Academia Sinica, including serving as its Chair.
    2. 14 years on the Advisory Panel for the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange, USA.
    3. 8 years on advisory panels for University Research Committee (2000-2007) and University Grants Council (2013-2014) of the Hong Kong Government
