Fausto Guzzetti - Biography#

After graduating in Geology at the University of Perugia (1983) with a thesis on the structural geology of the Italian Central Apennines, I obtained a PhD in Geography at the University of Bonn (2006), with a thesis on Landslide Hazard and Risk Assessment. A senior researcher of the Italian National Research Council (CNR), from September 2009 to November 2019, I was Director of the Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection (IRPI) of the CNR. In December 2019, I joined the Italian National Department of Civil Protection, Presidency of the Council of Ministers, where I headed the Office for technical-scientific activities of forecasting and risk prevention. In 2023, I returned to the Italian National Research Council (CNR). My main research interests relate to natural hazards and associated risks, with emphasis on geomorphological hazards, mainly landslides and floods; the impact of hazards on the population; landslide detection and prediction, at different spatial and temporal scales, including early warning systems; and the effects of climate and its variations on landslide hazards and risks. In recent years, I have developed an interest in ethical issues related to natural hazard research and applications. I was president of the Natural Hazards (NH) division, and a promoter of the EGU journal Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences (NHESS) for which I served as executive editor (2011-2015).
