Tomasz Jan Guzik MD, MSc.,Ph.D., FRCPS (Glasg), FACP, FRSE - Curriculum Vitae#
Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine, University of Edinburgh, UK
Professor of Medicine, Jagiellonian University, Poland
Editor-in-Chief, Cardiovascular Research
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY & SCIENTIFIC IMPACT:
Professor Guzik is a clinician-scientist & academic leader with over two decades of impact in cardiovascular medicine and discovery science. He is internationally recognised for seminal work linking immune mechanisms and oxidative stress to vascular dysfunction and hypertension, including foundational insights into oxidative stress in human vessels and immune-driven hypertension.
CITATION IMPACT: 27,947 Total Citations; H-Index: 78 (ISI WoS); 97 (GoogleScholar); 61 Papers Cited >100 Times
Highly Cited Researcher (2021-2024)
RESEARCH FOCUS & KEY DISCOVERIES:
Professor Guzik integrates molecular biology, vascular physiology, and clinical investigation to reframe hypertension as an immune-mediated vascular disorder.
He provided early human evidence (Oxford) that NADPH oxidase ROS cause endothelial dysfunction in diabetes and hypertension (Circulation 2000; Circ Res 2000; Circulation 2022).
He demonstrated a causal role for lymphocytes (T cells) in experimental and human hypertension, establishing cardiovascular immunology as a mechanistic framework for blood pressure elevation and vascular dysfunction (J Exp Med 2007; Nat Rev Cardiol 2024).
Now: interrogates neuro-immune pathways linking hypertension, atherosclerosis and cognitive impairment, using integrated translational pipelines from cellular mechanisms to human phenotyping and population-scale analyses (Circulation, 2020; Nature 2022; Immunity 2025; Eur Heart J 2024).
ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP & SERVICE
