Iryna Gurevych - Biography#


Iryna Gurevych is a Full Professor at the Computer Science Department of the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, and head of the UKP Lab. She also serves as an adjunct professor at MBZUAI in the UAE and at INSAIT in Bulgaria. As a Distinguished Professor at the National Center for Cybersecurity ATHENE, she brings together a deep understanding of human language and the latest breakthroughs in machine learning to develop methods for more trustworthy, transparent and safe AI. Her work focuses on advancing natural language processing and human–AI collaboration in security-relevant contexts, including the analysis of complex misinformation and the design of reliable and safe AI systems.

Her recognition includes the Royal Society Milner Award and Lecture 2025, membership in the Leopoldina (German National Academy of Sciences), an ERC Advanced Grant for the project InterText – Modeling Text as a Living Object in a Cross-Document Context, election to the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW), and, since 2025, membership in the Academia Europaea, the pan-European academy of sciences, humanities and letters. She is also the first recipient of the LOEWE Chair of Excellence in Hesse, Germany.

Beyond these honors, Gurevych has played a leading role in shaping the international NLP and AI community. She has served as the President of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) and the President of SIGDAT. She co-directs the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) NLP program. She was the Founder and Co-Director of the Centre for the Digital Foundation of Research in the Humanities, Social, and Educational Sciences (CEDIFOR) and the DFG-funded Research Training Group AIPHES. An ELLIS Fellow since 2020, she was also awarded ACL Fellow in 2020 for her outstanding work in natural language processing and machine learning. Her earlier awards include the Lichtenberg-Professorship Career Award (2008) of the Volkswagen Foundation and the Emmy-Noether Career Award of the DFG (2007).
